Leigh Campbell's Tips To Empowerment

Let's talk empowerment

The word ‘empower’ is a funny one. I have to admit I usually associate it with big social movements, public marches, covers of Time magazine.

But feeling empowered isn't something that needs to be reserved for difficult struggles or hard-fought triumphs. It’s an emotion, brought on by action, that can make you feel positive in the everyday. And it’s the small everyday things that add up to the big things. So, here are  some ways I feel empowered.

My Tips To Feeling Empowered

I’ve learned to say ‘No’. This took me a long time, but learning to say no to a social obligation when in fact it’s going to deplete your energy or you just need downtime is absolutely okay. In fact it’s necessary in this busy and stressful world. Learning to say no also applies to career decisions. And to friendships or relationships which are one-sided or destructive.

I observe my girlfriends. I often think about being in the shoes of the friends I admire and that makes me feel empowered to soldier through the struggles in my own life. Like my girlfriend who balances an amazing career while raising her own little woman as a single mother. Or another friend, who through her own experience of stillbirth, created a safe place on Instagram for parents to talk about the grief of child loss.

I spend time with my family. Working in the media is so rewarding but there are aspects of the industry that can be a little...superficial. When I feel myself slipping into an Instagram vortex of comparison and self-doubt I go for dinner with my siblings at my parents place. They couldn't care less about holidays and handbags and that empowers me to reset and remember what really matters.

I give myself a break. This is the most difficult one. I am extremely hard on myself and have to work daily at changing my negative internal dialog. Instead of telling myself there’s no point to exercising or that I’ll never stick to healthy eating, I try to project the positive feeling that will come at the end of caring for myself. Go for the walk, emails can wait.
